Shot on Location on the grounds of St. Dhulaighs Church on the North Side of Dublin. This was a short project for our final year in Colaiste Dhulaigh Comms and Media Production Coarse. Planned, Choreographed, Shot Edited and Effects added all in the space of 4 weeks. Starring Jonathan East and Jamie Doyle with Lorcan Cosgrave operating the Camera. The Lighting was a Small 50 watts Halogen mounted onto the Canon XM-1 camera. The High intensity Illumination lights for the Shadows was the 2000 Watt Display lights in the grounds already. Which were the original attraction to the location that gave Jamie the idea to shoot there. Originally we were going to shoot during the Day in front of Malahide Castle. Being Shot late at night in January it was intensely cold. We started shooting after 11pm as not to intimidate too many drivers on the Malahide road who could see 40ft high Shadows having a Duel on the wall of the Church. The wind was bitingly cold, which can probably been seen in our faces in some shots. The effects were done in Alam DV, frame by frame, about 10,000 separate Lightsabres were drawn. Each of the 3 of us took a set of shots and completed the effects. It took 5 full 8 hr days and two twelve hour days for us to complete the effects. Two G4 Macs and 2 PCs were used. We rendered the shots out as .mov files and reincorporated them back into the edit. We used all Machines to take the work of rendering but found that the MACs renders were Superior so all shots when finished were rendered on the G4s. There are many 'Duel' lightsabre shorts out there, some have more advanced moves and Sabres than ours, this one was made 5 years ago and it is our Lightsabre moive and we are still proud of it :) One of the questions I get asked mostly by people not so into the whole lightsabre thing, 'Why didnt you do something more original?' Well I ask Who doesnt want to have their own Lightsabre? Never Have I worked on a crew who were all dedicated to making this short, It was a great experience and I hope we can do it again some day.
