There have been strong reactions from the French and Spanish governments to news of the killing by ETA suspects of a Spanish policeman in France. "The government will fight terrorism and all those who support it with all our resources," said the Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero. "They will be caught, just like all the others before. We can't bring back those we've lost. We will never be able to compensate their relatives and friends, but we can offer them a little bit of comfort, by saying that the killers will pay for what they have done." The French interior minister, Michele Alliot Marie, condemned the killing and explained why the Spanish officers were in France: "It was a normal operation, which means trying to determine the wherabouts of ETA members who come into French territory to hide or prepare attacks.
