150,000 years ago, lava flowed from numerous fissures and holes on land in the West Mesa near Albuquerque. That's unlike most volcanoes, where the lava flows straight up and out from one vertical vent. The now in-active volcanoes sit on land that's sacred to Pueblo Indians of the Rio Grande Valley. They consider the volcanoes and petroglyphs etched into the boulders to be a direct connection to their ancestors.
