http://www.tamilnation.org/tamileelam/maveerar/2007.htm http://www.yarl.com Nadesan Satyendra, 27 November 2006 All peoples remember, honour and mourn their war dead. The 11th of November is Remembrance Day for the countries of the British Commonwealth such as Great Britain, Canada, Australia and South Africa as well as for some European countries such as France and Belgium. The Cenotaph (meaning Empty Tomb) in London carries the simple inscription "The Glorious Dead" and it is here that a Remembrance service is held each year at 11 am on the Sunday nearest 11 November. For the people of Tamil Eelam and for Tamils living in many lands and across distant seas, the 27th of November is the day on which they remember, honour and mourn those who have given their lives in the Tamil Eelam struggle for freedom from alien Sinhala rule. It is the day marked by the death of Shankar in 1982 - the first death of a cadre of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. Since then, more than 17,900 have given their lives so that their brothers and sisters may live with self respect and in freedom - in Tamil we say thanmaanam - தன்மானம். The Tamil people do not seek to glorify war because we know too well the pain and suffering that war brings in its trail. Neither do we seek to glorify our war heroes. To glorify is to boast and magnify. And we seek neither to boast nor to magnify. But we do seek to remember, honour and mourn our war dead - remember with gratitude, honour with humility and mourn from deep within our hearts. And, at the same time, we seek to re dedicate ourselves to the cause of justice and freedom for which our brothers and sisters, our udanpirapukal - உடன் பிறப்புகள், gave their lives. Those who have died shall not have died in vain. The people of the United States honour their war heroes with burial in the Arlington National Cemetry. The people of Tamil Eelam have honoured their war heroes with burial, in துயிலும் இல்லம் - Thuyilum Illam.Today many memorials (துயிலும் இல்லங்கள்) exist in Tamil Eelam where the war dead, the Maaveerars, have been buried. They are the resting places, the homes of those who will not die in our hearts - our அணையாத தீபங்கள்....

Heroes Day Maaveerar Naal So far, Thousands of LTTE freedom fighters have sacrificed their lives for the advancement of the Tamil Eelam liberation struggle and for drawing world attention to it. The courageous death of each and every one of these fighters is a heroic chapter in the story of the Tamil Eelam liberation struggle. 27 November 1982 is the day in which Lt. Shankar (Sathianathan) gave his life for the liberation struggle. That was an unforgettable day. Today, LTTE freedom fighters are giving their lives almost daily. Daily events in their memory are also being held. But Shankar's death was unique. There was a sacrifice even in his death itself. Regrettably it was a situation when the LTTE was not able to publicly announce his death, the first in the organisation's history, to the outside world. The news of his death, had it been announced by the LTTE, would have put many LTTE supporters in danger of being hunted by the oppressive Sinhala government. So his death was not made public immediately and it was only on the first anniversary of his death, was it announced to the outside world. LTTE freedom fighters have died in different circumstances; on the battlefield, by taking cyanide to avoid capture, killed by the enemy after a traitor's acts, killed by a traitor's hand, succumbing to battle injuries when treatment has failed. In all these ways, Thousands of fighters have laid down their lives for the ideal of Tamil Eelam and a dawn for the Tamil people. To commemorate these fighters together, the LTTE has decided to declare November 27, the remembrance day of Lt. Shankar (the first LTTE fighter to die), as Maveerar (Heroes) day and to celebrate that day annually as a rising day.

LTTE is a freedom fighter for Tamils" LTTE :: The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam :: LTTE "One man's terrorist, they say is another's freedom fighter. Currently, despite the fuss over the Sri Lankan army and LTTE fighting together in 1989 to eliminate the TNA, the LTTE are no doubt the Indian and the Sri Lankan governments' terrorists, but with equal certainty they are, and always have been, the Sri Lankan Tamil's freedom fighters.Who is LTTE ?Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) is the armed rebellion organisation fighting for the independence of Tamil Eelam. It is a unique organisation in the world in the following aspects.1. Every cadre wear a cyanide capsule around the neck and commit suicide to avoid divulging vital information.2. LTTE is the only rebel organisation which has naval and air wings known as Sea Tigers and Air Tigers respectively.3. All the cadre wear uniform. Why did Tamils in Sri Lanka want Tamil Eelam ?Sri Lanka, which was renamed in Sinhala in 1972, had been called as Ceylon by British during colonial times. Before 1833, the Tamil people were under different administration. They had their own kingdoms, culture and language which are very different from those of Sinhalese until 1505. The first colonial invasion took place in 1505. British brought Tamils and Sinhalese under one administration in 1833 and called this new colony as Ceylon. When the British left in 1948, the 20% Tamils were left with 80% Sinhalese within a unitary country where the decisions were taken by democratic parliament system. Under this system, racially polarised Sinhalese and Tamils were ruled by the constant majority of Sinhalese against the democratic wishes of Tamils as Tamils were the constant minority.Reference: Document submitted by 17 NGOs in 50th Sessions of UN Commission on Human Rights:"There is a need to recognise that the deep divisions between the Sri Lanka government and the Tamil people cannot be resolved by the use of force against Tamil resistance. The Tamil population in the North and East of the island, who have lived from ancient times within relatively well defined geographical boundaries in the north and east of the island, share an ancient heritage, a vibrant culture, and a living language which traces its origins to more than 2500 years ago. ...Before the advent of the British ..., separate kingdoms existed for the Tamil areas and for the Sinhala areas in the island. The Tamil people and the Sinhala people were brought within the confines of one state for the first time by the British in 1833. After the departure of the British in 1948, an alien Sinhala people speaking a language different to that of the Tamils and claiming a separate and distinct heritage has persistently denied the rights and fundamental freedoms of the Tamil people. .. ! It is ...our view that the Secretary General should consider invoking his good offices with the aim of contributing to the establishment of peace in the island of Sri Lanka through respect for the existence of the Tamil homeland in the North East of the island of Sri Lanka and recognition for the right of the Tamil people to freely determine their political status."
