Ancients assumed that nature and the sky is inhabited and governed by magical powers, demons, and gods who looked back at them, who planned their lives, and who communicated with them. This belief in a living sky, a sort of empire of the heavens, was part of the "common coin" of thought in the Ancient Greek world, found in the civic cults of the Fertile Crescent, in mystery religions such as Mithraism, magical texts and philosophies, Hermetism, Stoicism, Gnosticism, and Middle and Neo Platonism.
