On Earth Day, April 22, 2007, Merced's Stop Wal-Mart Action Team (SWAT) held a different kind of Earth Day Picnic -- complete with piñatas in the shape of Wal-Mart trucks for the kids to swing at for a chance at goodies. The picnic happened in the shadow of a proposed 1.2 million square foot, 275-acre Wal-Mart Distribution Center. Residents are concerned that the 900 truck trips per day generated by the facility will worsen the Central Valley's epidemic of asthma and respiratory illness. SWAT is a grassroots organization of 2,000 Merced teachers, health professionals, business owners, parents, students, community leaders and residents working to protect the quality of life in Merced.
