A new after-school program shows that teaching kids to cook can also be a valuable education experience. Common Threads is a non-profit cooking program founded by Art Smith, an award-winning cookbook author and personal chef to Oprah Winfrey. The program teaches kids about different cultures through the variety of foods used, as well as how to interact with others. The program also gives kids more experience in an art they are rarely taught – the culinary arts. Some professional chefs volunteer their time to the program and corporations provide funding and help with supplies.
