If you loved Jacques Gauthe and mourn his untimely death earlier this year as much as we do, you will derive satisfaction from this video clip. The scene is "C'est what?" on June 11 1994. Jacques is on his first visit to Toronto,as the guest star in a jazz concert and he warms up by joining the Hot Five Jazzmakers at their Saturday matinee. He is right on the top of his game, swinging like mad, with his superb tone and interesting musical ideas flowing beautifully. He was at his best. The number being played is "Oh Baby" written by Owen Murphy and recorded by Fletcher Henderson's Dixie Stompers April 6 1924. Jacques is very well supported by the band, though it is mostly a showcase for the reeds, with Jacques opening up on clarinet and Janet Shaw on alto sax. Later Jacques switches to soprano and an inspired Janet comes in on baritone in response.
