Fishermen who died at sea honored in Seattle

On Sunday at Seattle's Fisherman's Terminal, 12 fishermen who perished at sea were honored for their service. KING 5's Bernard Choi reports.

Tsunami survivors in India's southern Tamil Nadu state paid tribute on Tuesday (December 26) to the victims on the second anniversary of the disaster. As thousands of people across tsunami-hit nations lit candles, visited mass graves and observed two minutes of silence to remember the 230,000 killed around the Indian Ocean, residents and workers in Marina Beach, Chennai prayed for the dead. More than a 1,000 fishermen and their families from Srinivaspuram, Nochikuppam, Doomingkuppam, Mullaima Nagar and Bhavanikuppam gathered in Chennai to light candles and observe two minutes of silence. Two years on many survivors are still living an uncertain life, unsure of when and where they will move into permanent houses and be able to get back to a more normal life. "We are holding a silent march in the Marina beach on the second anniversary of tsunami to commemorate those who lost their lives due to the killer waves," said Anbhazhagan, President of the Tamil Nadu Fishermen's Organisation. The tsunami hit India's fishing community hardest, with hundreds of small fishing hamlets dotted with poorly constructed houses and shacks located right on the beach. Most of the victims were women and children who could not run fast enough to escape the waves. A 9.1 magnitude undersea earthquake off the Sumatra islands, the strongest in four decades, triggered the tsunami, which smashed into shorelines as far away as east Africa. The tsunami killed more than 7,000 people in Tamil Nadu. Desapattu, a member of the fishing community, said compensation had been paid, but there could never be any compensation for life. "It's been two years now, the loss is still there. Despite the compensation, the loss will always be there. It would be nice to see our people back, but they cannot come back. Whenever we come here we are reminded of those families who were killed in the tsunami," she said. The fishermen did not go to work today as a tribute to the victims. "Every year we commemorate this day by not venturing into the sea. This year also we are not going into the sea. This is our tribute to those dead in the tsunami," said Mohan, a fisherman. While hundreds remembered the day when their loved ones died, a family in north-western Jaipur city recalled their survival. Digvijay and Anita Baradiya had gone on a holiday to Thailand with their children and had just reached their destination when the tsunami stuck. "There was water everywhere all around us but we couldn't understand what was wrong at that time. We saw people running from one place to another. We called our travel agent who told us that there were tremors in the sea. We saw people screaming. It was a morning time. We saw people coming back from walks. Some were without husbands, some without wives, some people's children were missing. It was scary," said Anita.

Another deep sea monster has turned up again off the shores of Japan just a month after deep sea 'living fossil sharks' were caught by Japanese fishermen at the same shores. The deep sea 'living fossil' shark, called the goblin shark due to its large snout, usually lives 1,200 meters underwater but had been first spotted swimming in shallow waters off the coast of Tokyo bay at the end of March. The sharks, while not rare in deep sea, are rarely seen alive and very little is known about them. Just days before the shark was found, a different type of deep sea shark, an eel-like rare prehistoric shark called a "frilled shark", appeared from the deep seas off the coast of Japan, making the goblin shark the second deep sea shark to have been found in the same month. Furthermore, those sharks were captured separately at almost the same ocean in February. A marine park official believed a particular seasonal up-current from the deep seas carried these sharks up to the surface. "Though we are not sure as to why we could capture several deep sea sharks in such a short period, we know clearly that those sharks have been found and captured around Tokyo bay since the old days. I suppose the reason of their frequent appearances may be connected with its geological formation where water depth suddenly drops from shallow to deep sea," said Satoshi Tada, a deep-sea shark keeper at the Tokyo Sea Life Park. Though the frilled shark died immediately, the Goblin shark was immediately removed into a pressured water tank in an aquarium in the Tokyo Sea Life park to keep it alive. Their attempt failed when it died on Tuesday (April 10) morning, nearly two weeks after being moved to the aquarium. It lived almost three times longer than the previous case, when the aquarium displayed the shark in a regular fish tank. For the aquarium, keeping deep-sea creatures in a pressure water tank was to explore the unknown world. "It is safe to say that this experience proved that pressure water tank could be useful for keeping deep-sea shark alive to some extent," Tada said. An autopsy is scheduled to find out more about the shark. A quirky story.

Another deep sea monster has turned up again off the shores of Japan just a month after deep sea 'living fossil sharks' were caught by Japanese fishermen at the same shores. The deep sea 'living fossil' shark, called the goblin shark due to its large snout, usually lives 1,200 meters underwater but had been first spotted swimming in shallow waters off the coast of Tokyo bay at the end of March. The sharks, while not rare in deep sea, are rarely seen alive and very little is known about them. Just days before the shark was found, a different type of deep sea shark, an eel-like rare prehistoric shark called a "frilled shark", appeared from the deep seas off the coast of Japan, making the goblin shark the second deep sea shark to have been found in the same month. A marine park official believed a particular seasonal up-current from the deep seas carried these sharks up to the surface. Village residents from the Rostov region of Russia caught a weird creature two weeks ago after a strong storm in the Sea of Azov. The shark-looking creature was producing strange squeaky sounds. The fishermen originally believed that they had caught an alien and decided to film the monster with the help of a cell phone camera. More than 200 civilians were killed and hundreds of others injured in the five-month long Sri Lanka military offensive carried out in sea, air and land on Vaharai and adjoining coastal hamlets. Nearly 40,000 IDPs stay in 49 temporary shelters and with friends and relatives elsewhere in the military controlled part of Batticaloa district. The Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from Vaharai and neighboring Trincomalee district express resentment over the inequity in reimbursing relief and compensation by Sri Lanka Government authorities. Vaharai is the second largest Divisional Secretariat division in the district, comprising 21% of the land area. However, the population of the Division is low compared to other divisions, and more than 70% of Vaharai residents live below poverty line. Shortage of teachers during the past decade has resulted in low literacy rate. Vaharai lies 75 km north of Batticaloa bordering Trincomalee district in the north and Polannaruwa district in the west. The only trunk road passes through this area is A- 15, the Trincomalee- Batticaloa Road and the branches of Mahavali Gangai, the longest river in Sri Lanka severs the road at two places i.e. at Verugal and Kiliveddy. Despite operating an in-house video production unit, they regularly ask Classlane Media to produce training and safety videos for them. The Survive! video was developed as a training tool to encourage fishermen to survive at sea if they should have to abandon their vessel. The programme uses a mixture of drama (shot on a real trawler in the English Channel with real fishermen in acting roles), training footage and a location-based presenter (Sarah Beeny from Channel 4's 'Property Ladder') to thoroughly yet entertainingly outline all areas of sea survival. Underwater photography, minicams and stunt work all added to constant sea-sickness to create a programme which has been distributed and viewed throughout Europe and is now recognised as essential viewing for novice and experienced sailors alike.
