A popular actor, Matt Hagen uses a chemical from Roland Daggett's labs to alter his facial features without using makeup, thus hiding the fact that he is really disfigured. However, Daggett takes control of Hagen and has him pretend to be Bruce Wayne in order to steal documents from Lucius Fox. In the end, the real Bruce Wayne ends up under arrest and Fox is seriously injured. Daggett overdoses Hagen with the chemical, turning him into a hideous monster called Clayface.
