Congress has sent the White House an election-year Farm Bill that includes a boost in farm subsidies and more money for food stamps amid rising grocery prices. The Senate passed the bill 81-15 this morning, a day after the House approved it with 318 yes votes enough to override a presidential veto. President Bush has threatened to veto the $290 billion bill, saying it's fiscally irresponsible and too generous to wealthy corporate farmers at a time of record crop prices. Pomeroy:The vote required to overide a veto is 290 so coming in now with 318 is a very strong signal that by an overwhelming bi-partisan majority we intend to pass this farm bill and enact it into law. I hope this would make the president rethink a little bit.
