Built in 1961, the Berlin Wall was more then just a wall that divided East and West Germany, it represented one of the most iconic symbols of the Cold War. The idea, which was conceived by East Germany, and approved by the Soviets, was primarily designed to keep skilled labor from leaving to go to West Germany, a problem which had been causing a drain in the economy of East Germany. Guards which were stationed at the wall were given instructions to shoot and kill anyone trying to flea East Germany to go to West Germany. Many East Germans risked their lives to migrate to West Germany during this time period. On August 23, 1989, Austria opened its borders to Hungary, and more then 13,000 East Germans who were tourists in Hungary, fled to Austria. This sparked mass protests in East Germany.
