Whereas a number of white acts spent the 50s stealing hit blues and soul songs and sanitizing them for pop audiences, Rare Earth largely made a career out of taking hit Motown songs and giving them an even funkier rock sound - and doing it as Motown's first major white act. Formed in Detroit in the mid 60s by drummer Peter Rivera, saxophonist Gil Bridges, bassist John Parrish, guitarist Rod Richards and keyboardist Kenny James, Rare Earth was playing the local bar scene and had released one minor album (Dreams/Answers) when they were signed by Motown. Berry Gordy and company had enough faith that they created a Rare Earth label around the group. Rare Earth scored a surprise first hit on its Motown debut with an infectious, rocked-out version of the Temptations' "Get Ready." The single and the accompanying album hit the Pop and Soul top twenty. The group went back to the well again the next year with its album Ecology and the hit remake of "(I Know I'm) Losing You," another cut from the Tempts catalog. The group's third album yielded perhaps its most popular single, the Dino Fekaris composition "I Just Want to Celebrate," a fantastic blend of bar rock and funky soul that hit the top 10. Rare Earth remained pretty prolific over the next several years, but the members' own compositions didn't click with audiences as their remakes had. After a few more albums on Motown they moved to the Prodigal Records label for a handful of discs, but failed to generate much interest. The group split in the mid-80s and Rivera began years of touring singing the Rare Earth catalog. He now lives in Southern California with his wife of over 30 years and most recently toured with the Classic Rock All-Stars. Bridges formed a new version of Rare Earth and attempted a comeback with the album Different World in 1993. The group, now with a lineup of Bridges, Ivan Greilick, Randy Burghdoff, Mike Bruner and Floyd Stokes, still plays around the US and internationally. They've recently self-released The Rare Earth, a disc of new recordings of some of their biggest hits that is available through their website.

Dick is consumed with jealousy when Frank Cooper, a very handsome, former student of Mary's, shows up to visit her. Frank tries to tell Dick he's gay, but Dick mistakenly thinks Frank's outing himself as an alien. Relieved that Frank is an alien, Dick admits he's one too. Frank takes Dick to a gay bar, which Dick assumes is an 'alien' bar. Dick reports back to the family about his discovery of the fabulous alien bar. He has discovered there are aliens all around them and that half of Broadway is openly alien. Mary shows up at the gay bar and demands to know why Dick is there. Dick finally figures out that Frank is gay, not an alien. Dick then has to prove to Mary that he's not a homosexual. Meanwhile, Don tells Sally about a bank robbery he foiled and she decides to rob a bank, just for the challenge. Sally enlists Harry and Tommy to help her, but soon they begin to suspect that she is just a stool pigeon, who is going to reveal their bank robbery plan to Don. When Harry and Tommy tell Sally of their suspicions, she is furious, and tries to pit them against one another. Eventually, Sally, Tommy, and Harry become so distrustful of one another that they all go to the bank separately to rob it. When a security guard approaches them they all panic and run off.

This is Same Boy You've Always Known, by the White Stripes The Dirty Fries began in St. Louis, Missouri, where they still reside, in a bar known as the Trainwreck. There, while looking at the menu, they noticed an item called "Dirty Fries." The name immediately was unanimously agreed upon and the greatest band to ever perform was formed. The duo immediately began to attempt to gig locally. There was only one setback: the two members were only thirteen years old. They began to play for tips at a bar up the street from where they lived, known as Mike Duffy's, or occasionally in the University City Loop. Another setback was that they weren't paid a regular salary; every bit of money earned was earned from tips. This proved to be problematic, as it was very unpredictable how much they would make. After one night where there was a particularly low accumulation in the tip jar, Collin McCabe said to his bandmate and brother, "Dude, we gotta do something about this." And so they did. The Dirty Fries have recently turned fifteen and finished a new demo/album, which they recorded in one day in their family room, with many of the songs in one take. Hopefully, with this new demo, they can finally get the people to listen. But until then, it's back to playing for tips.
