Tampa Bay's Media Talk's Creative of the Week has known of poor people who caught 10,000 chickens each night, loaded them on flatbed trucks for pennies apiece, and then donated all the money to someone else, not keeping a penny for themselves. Dr. Mary Ann Duke of Sarasota, Fla., has written a fiction novel based on that experience. The book, The Chicken Catchers (Granite Publishing, ISBN 1-56684-628-5) has the setting of the scorching Florida summer of 1975. The alligator attack, near hurricane hailstorm and a TV appearance liven up the story. Recipes are included at the end of her book. And if that isn't enough, Mary Ann also performs comedy monologues in the character of Miss Lamebrain, the Queen of Corn Pone County.
