Wild coyotes vs. wild deer. It is extremely rare to film wild coyotes and deer at the same time, and even for difficult to film them interacting, as shown here. They are natural enemies and generally avoid each other. Part 1: Six deer including bucks and fawns watch coyotes. As one coyote approaches the deer run away, but soon a curious deer approaches the coyote. The coyote then runs into the woods. Soon a coyote comes back out of the woods. The deer have approached quite closely, but then keep their distance. Normally an experienced adult deer is not too fearful of a coyote, but there were younger deer in the group that needed defending. A coyote will definitely kill a young deer. Both the coyotes and deer were curious, but did not approach each other very closely. The coyotes were young coyotes. Part II: the coyote runs across a small valley from the group of deer and finds an animal hole. The coyote leaps and pounces, and then begins to dig. The white tip of its tail is visible wagging swiftly. It makes a kill and eats it. It then runs toward the deer. The deer cluster together as animals sometimes do when they expect an attack. But the coyote then vears off and begins to hunt. After a while, its eyes began to reflect my infrared camera light and I thought it was watching me. It continued to mull around glancing in my direction and then sat down. Suddenly it shot out in my direction and I thought it was after me, but I stayed there. Then I realized the other coyote had arrived. The two coyotes began to play. The deer continued to watch from a distance and did not approach again. Video taped in infrared light. It runs with its tail down. Comments and videos show these monster coyotes, e.g., "Coyote attack." Coyotes rarely attack humans. The coyote is very vocal with a number of sounds including barks, yips, whines, growls, and howls. The coyote (Canis latrans) is also called the prairie wolf. It is a mammal belonging to the order carnivora and related to the domestic dog. They range from Panama through Canada. The name coyote came from Mexican Spanish. The Latin name means barking dog. Nineteen subspecies exist. Its fur is grayish-brown to yellowish-brown and can be black or white. It has a long bushy tail. **Some of the world's largest bucks live in Ohio. Some of its world champion bucks have Boone and Crockett scores of over 300 points. Ohio's Beatty Buck may be the (or among the) largest ever taken by a hunter. The male white-tailed deer, or buck (Odocoileus virginianus - normally called the whitetail), can weigh more than 400 pounds and the female up to 175 pounds. Males of one year or older have antlers. Young bucks with very small antlers are called button bucks. When the antlers begin to grow in the late spring, they are covered with a very vascular tissue known as velvet or moss. This drops off later. The Boone & Crockett scoring system is used to rate antlers or racks. Bucks shed their antlers at the end of breeding season (rut). Some female deer also have antlers. The piebald or white deer, a deer having more white than normal but not an albino, is very rare Deer have an amazing assortment of communicative signs. Approximately 100 different vocalizations have been recorded, such as tending grunts, dominant grunts, bleats, and many others. They make extensive use of sign language. The whitetail is found throughout most of the U.S., southern Canada, Central America, and in the northern portions of South America. However, in the western U.S., the mule or Black-tailed deer is more common. It is a generalist, which can adapt to a wide variety of habitats, including woodland, open savanna, and even sage areas.
