A volcano erupts in southern Chile for the first time in thousands of years forcing authorities to evacuate some 4,000 residents from near by villages. Now some of those villages are covered in ash, posing problems for all residents. Farmers are now seeking clean hay to feed their cows, village squares now look like ghost towns. Chilean President Michelle Bachelet visited the area in an effort to assess the damage. Similar scenes can be found in Argentina, where the fallout from the ash continued drifting over the mountains. Many residents now wear dust masks and bandanas. Chilean authorities were caught off-guard by the eruption of a volcano long considered inactive.
