Democratic presidential hopefuls Senators Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama faced off in a crucial debate in Austin, Texas- Cuba and immigration were early topics in the debate in a state with an influential Hispanic vote. Both candidates differed on how quickly to hold talks with Cuba now that Fidel Castro has resigned. SOUNDBITE: Sen. Hillary Clinton, Democratic presidential candidate, saying, "I would not meet with him until there was evidence" SOUNDBITE: Sen. Barack Obama, Democratic presidential candidate, saying, " I would meet without pre-conditions." On illegal immigration, both candidates agreed on the need for comprehensive reform. Clinton promised to introduce a path to legalization within the first 100 days of her presidency. SOUNDBITE: Sen. Hillary Clinton, Democratic presidential candidate, saying, " We need a path to legalization, to bring the immigrants out of the shadows, give them the conditions we expect them to meet, paying a fine for coming here illegally, and learning English" SOUNDBITE: Sen. Barack Obama, Democratic presidential candidate, saying, "We need comprehensive reform and that means stronger border security" But it was the very spirited discussion on healthcare that revealed some significant policy differences. SOUNDBITE: Sen. Barack Obama, Democratic presidential candidate, saying, "Sen Clinton believes the only way to achieve universal health care is to force everybody to purchase it." SOUNDBITE: Sen. Hillary Clinton, Democratic presidential candidate, saying, "I just know, if we dont go ahead and require everyone to get insurance the health insurance industry will still game the system." The candidates traded barbs over the issue of experience. SOUNDBITE: Sen. Barack Obama, Democratic presidential candidate, saying, "Senator Clinton of late has said: 'Let's get real.' The implication is that the people who've been voting for me or involved in my campaign are somehow delusional." Clinton brought up Obama's admitted use of rhetoric borrowed from Obama supporter Massachusetts governor Deval Patrick. SOUNDBITE: Sen. Hillary Clinton, Democratic presidential candidate, saying, "Well, I think that if your candidacy is going to be about words, then they should be your own words. That's, I think, a very simple proposition. And, you know, lifting whole passages from someone else's speeches is not change you can believe in, it's change you can Xerox." In the end, the two seemed to find common ground. SOUNDBITE: Sen. The two candidates will meet in one more debate on Tuesday in Cleveland,Ohio ahead of the key March 4th primaries in Texas and Ohio .
