Thousands of people marked the last day of a national mourning for victims of a devastating earthquake with patriotic flag waving, chanting and a three-minute moment of silence at Tiananmen Square in central Beijing on Wednesday (May 21). More than 40,000 people have been confirmed dead and more than 247,000 injured after May 12's 8.0 magnitude earthquake hit southwest province of Sichuan. The government said it expected the final death toll to exceed 50,000. China started a three-day national mourning on Monday (May 19), with flags raised at half-mast and public entertainment suspended. For the third day in a row, thousands of enthusiastic Chinese citizens gathered at Tiananmen Square, the world's biggest square and considered the political heart of Beijing, to show their support and sympathy for victims and survivors in Sichuan. The mourners, mostly young people, waved Chinese national flags and chanted "Go, China", "Go, Sichuan". Some even burst into tears....
