Hello, I'm Melisse Hinkle in for Kristin Volk with a UPI White House Weekly. Due to some bad weather here in Washington, D.C., we're on Capitol Hill. This week, President Bush signed a housing bill that's expected to help about 400,000 homeowners struggling to pay their mortgages. Bush signed the bill privately in the Oval Office, accompanied by some of his top officials. The measure is also intended to give additional government support to mortgage lenders Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Bush initially opposed parts of the bill and threatened to veto it, but he changed his mind last week in an effort to provide immediate assistance to troubled homeowners. The president met with Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani this week. The two leaders appeared on the South Lawn of the White House following a private meeting in the Oval Office. Despite underlying tensions, Bush praised Gilani and called Pakistan an ally in the fight to stop violent extremists. The leaders did not address...
