The expedition has been operational since 1966 as part of the team investigating Cape Kalliakra and territories within the present-day administrative region of Dobrich. In the period of 1966 -- 1969, the excavations had been carried out under Georgi Dzhingov, senior associate with the Archeological Museum, Sofia under Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS), and Lyubka Bobcheva, Ph.D., then director of the District History Museum of Tolboukhin (present-day Dobrich). The excavations at Gradnitsa, Sevlievo Area, had been carried out under Prof. Athanas Milchev, then head of the Archeology Dept. of Sofia University.
