Enrichment is used to encourage natural behaviors such as foraging and nesting. Several types of enrichment are provided for the Atlantic puffins located in the Sea Cliffs exhibit. Aquarium staff introduce items like pine needles and plastic plants to the puffins. Using their beaks, the birds carry these items to their nesting sites. This activity helps adolescent puffins develop nesting and burrowing skills. Staff also release crickets into the exhibit for fun and entertainment. Puffins are fascinated by these jumping insects and will often chase them throughout the habitat. Mounds of ice with embedded fish encourage foraging behavior. Puffins, also known as the "clown of the sea," are curious about new items placed within the exhibit.
