In a joint letter from over 10 of the major airlines in the United States, the American public is being given notice for substantial increases in the near future. Citing high fuel costs as the main reason for industry and job cuts, airlines are left in need of raising capital. The Air Transport Association projects a $13 billion industry-wide loss for 2008, where fuel costs have risen 86% and over 20,000 jobs have been eliminated. Meanwhile, there has been a call for a reform in the industry, where we as a nation must look to limit the number of oil futures contracts one trader can have.
