In summer, watering is a daily life-saver for my outdoor container plants. Few plants can make it through the year on rainfall alone. Even the drought-happy ones look better if they are deeply watered every other week in high summer. Plants growing in containers need to be checked (and probably watered) every day or two. And every day by August, after they’ve been growing in the same pot for a few months and are royally pot-bound. I choose container plants that crave a good swelter, that keep growing and blooming when temperatures are in the nineties. They look their bodacious best even in the dog days.They are often the same plants whose teeth would chatter if it ever got down to the 50’s. So don’t shock your heat-lovers by watering them with chilly water. I’m on a well, so my water is particularly cold.
