Researchers have discovered a recording that predates Thomas Edison's breakthrough by almost two decades. Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville made it in 1860. Harry Smith and Maggie Rodriguez listen.

March 31, 2008—"It's ghostly. It's magic, " said an expert who heard the 1860 French recording of a human voice. The audio predates Edison's recording by 17 years.

This is another wild-and-woolly early jazz recording!The Frisco Jass Band plays "Yah-De-Dah" on Edison Blue Amberol cylinder # 3337, issued in 1917---close enough to 1920's jazz to put it in that general realm.The illustration, seen in the video from a 1921 Edison Blue Amberol catalog, shows the following as members of the band:--Arnold Johnson, Piano... ..Buster Johnson, Trombone.....Rudy Wiedoeft , Clarinet.....Marco Woolf , Violin. I cannot identify the fellows playing the drums and banjo.JUST NOTICED that the Blue Amberol literature obviously made an error as there's no vocal refrain by Irving Kauffman. AND, while no mention is made of Rudy's interweaving flights of fancy on the sax,he surely comes through loud and clear! In 1917 this band cut nine titles for Edison, all issued on Blue Amberol as well as Diamond Disc. It was among the first to make records marketed as "jass." Jaudas' Society Orchestra was the only Edison group to make an earlier recording characterized as "jass."The Frisco "Jass" Band was formed in early 1917 by Rudy Wiedoeft soon after he arrived in New York City. According to the July 1917 issue of Edison Amberola Monthly, the band "is now playing engagements at Montmartre, New York's famous midnight cafe, the Winter Garden and the leading summer resorts near New York." Presumably the word Frisco was chosen to reflect that the musicians were from California. Frisco. The November 1917 issue of Edison Amberola Monthly promoted the December release of "Yah-De-Dah" on Blue Amberol 3337 by stating, "The utter abandon displayed by a Jazz Band constitutes the greatest charm of this newest and smartest addition to modern dance music." Other Edison promotional literature added, "No players ever before played like this; hear them once and the Frisco Jazz Band will have you fascinated for life. Incidentally you'll fox-trot as never before to this music." (In late 1917 the company dropped quote marks from the band's name and, like other record manufacturers, switched from "Jass" to "Jazz.") "Yah-De-Dah" was recorded on July 26, 1917, and issued on Blue Amberol months afterwards.

Thomas Alva Edison, born in Milan, Ohio, on February 11, 1847, received a patent for the world's first successful phonograph in 1878. The year before, the prolific American inventor had happened upon a way to record sound as a result of his work on the telegraph and the telephone. His experiments led him to try a stylus on a tinfoil cylinder, which, to his surprise, played back the short message he recorded, ''Mary had a little lamb.'' Edison set aside this invention in 1878 to work on the incandescent light bulb, and other inventors moved forward to improve on the phonograph. In 1887, Edison resumed work on the device, using the wax-cylinder technique developed by Charles S. Tainter. Although initially used as a dictating machine, the phonograph proved to be a popular form of entertainment, and in 1906 Edison unveiled a series of musical and theatrical selections to the public through his National Phonograph Company. Continuing to improve on models and cylinders over the years, the Edison Disc Phonograph debuted in 1912 with the aim of competing in the popular record market. Edison's discs offered superior sound quality, but were not compatible with other popular disc players. During the 1920s, the early record business suffered with the growth of radio, and in 1929 recording production at Edison ceased forever. Edison, who acquired an astounding 1,093 patents in his eighty-four years, died in 1931.

Uncle Josh Buys An Automobile by Cal Stewart. The audio is from an old 78 RPM record. From Wikipedia: Cal Stewart (b. 1856 Charlotte County, Virginia, d. December 7, 1919) was a pioneer in vaudeville and early sound recordings. He is best remembered for his comic monologues in which he played "Uncle Josh" Weathersby, a resident of a mythical New England farming town called "Punkin Center." Born in Charlotte County, Virginia in 1856, Stewart spent his early life working in circuses, medicine shows and vaudeville to great acclaim as "Uncle Josh Weathersby from Way Down East". It was on the road that he befriended Mark Twain and later Will Rogers, two men who shared similar wit in comedy. Around 1897, Thomas Edison's studios hired him to cut several cylinder recordings of his famous speeches and songs. They were well received by the public, and launched an entire series of recordings based on the Uncle Josh character. Stewart's trademark on these recordings are the easily recognizable laugh that precedes his speeches. Best-selling recordings included "Uncle Josh's Arrival in New York" (1898), "I'm Old But I'm Awfully Tough (Laughing Song)" (1898), "Jim Lawson's Horse Trade With Deacon Witherspoon" (1901), "Uncle Josh's Huskin' Bee Dance" (1901) and "Uncle Josh Buys an Automobile" (1903). Stewart continued recording on Edison, Columbia, Victor, and independent labels up until his death on December 7, 1919. He also wrote two books based on his monologues and performed in theaters across America with his wife and her brother and sister.
