In 1947, Andres Herrera flew over the nesting beach of the Kemp's Ridley Sea Turtle. An estimated 40,000 female turtles had arrived in an arribaba (mass nesting) on this day. Until this time, the location of the nesting beach was unknown. The population plummeted due to predation, poaching and drowning of thousands of turtles in shrimp nets. Due to protection of the beach in Rancho Nuevo, Mexico, a headstarting program in the United States and the requirement of turtle excluder devices (TEDs) on shrimp trawls, the population is making a comeback.
