An 18-wheeler fiery crash left the driver badly burned and drivers in commuter chaos in Houston. It happened at 1 a.m. Monday on I-10 East near Hogan.

SOUTH MIAMI-DADE, Fla. (12/07) -- A suspected carjacker and his innocent passenger were killed Friday morning after their vehicle collided with an 18-wheeler at the entrance to the Florida Keys. According to the clerk at the Shell gas station located at 10 SE First Ave. in Florida City, an armed man entered a car occupied by a female passenger while the male driver went to pay for gas, just after midnight. The clerk said the man, who worked with the woman at Ocean Reef Resort in Key Largo, entered the station's convenience store to pay for gas and was returning to his car at Pump 10. Before he could reach his vehicle, the gunman forced his way into the car and fled the scene. A Florida Highway Patrol trooper who happened to be at the gas station pursued the carjacker, who took off southbound in the direction of the Florida Turnpike's endpoint. Roughly 12 miles from where the incident began, the stolen car came to a fiery end after it struck an 18-wheel tractor-trailer head-on on U.S. 1. The impact of the crash killed both the carjacker and the innocent female passenger instantly. The truck's driver was able to jump out before his vehicle went up in flames. Rescue crews transported him to the hospital in unknown condition, but he is expected to be OK. Authorities said the driver survived the accident by exiting his truck moments before the collision. "The operator of the tractor-trailer was treated here by a fire rescue and transported to a local facility," said Miami-Dade Fire Rescue's Eddie Ballester. The road has reopened after police shut it down for 12 hours.

An accident on Interstate 10 at the Bonnet Carre Spillway early Tuesday caused a fire that engulfed a mail-carrying truck and shut down eastbound lanes for five hours, authorities said. The 18-wheeler hauling mail to New Orleans was completely destroyed in the three-vehicle accident, according to State Police Troop B spokesman Joe Piglia. Postal Inspector Terry Barrett said no mail could be salvaged from the burned truck. Barrett said most of the destroyed mail was sent by parcel post, not first class, and the majority of it ultimately would have been hauled to Miami, although some was destined for local ZIP codes. The crash occurred at 3:19 a.m., and the subsequent traffic shutdown created major delays for commuters headed into the New Orleans area. Traffic on Interstates 10 and 55 had to be rerouted to Airline Highway, officials said. The I-10 eastbound lanes reopened about 8:31 a.m. Piglia said the accident involved a pickup truck driven by Joseph Manchester of Marrero in the left lane, a pickup driven by Michael Butscher of Ponchatoula in the right lane and an 18-wheeler driven by Ozell Williams of Tallahassee, Fla. Manchester's truck hit debris in the roadway and veered to the right, hitting Butscher's truck, Piglia said. Both vehicles then swerved right, hitting the right guardrail. Manchester's pickup deflected off the guardrail and came to rest in the left lane, where it was hit by the mail truck and pushed back onto the right shoulder, authorities said. After the crash, the 18-wheeler ignited and burned, blocking eastbound traffic. Special equipment had to be brought in to remove the burned remains of the truck, Piglia said. All drivers sustained minor injuries, Piglia said. Manchester was treated at East Jefferson General Hospital and released. The other two drivers were treated at the scene. There were no reports by late Tuesday about whether charges would be filed against anyone involved in the crash. Barrett said the truck was loaded in Baton Rouge and was headed to the main processing distribution plant on Loyola Avenue in New Orleans. Authorities said affected local ZIP codes are those starting with the numbers 700, which includes St. Bernard, Plaquemines and Jefferson parishes; 701, covering New Orleans; 703, in Terrebonne, St. Charles, St. John and St. James parishes; and 704 in St. Tammany, Washington and Tangipahoa parishes. Barrett couldn't provide details on how much mail the truck was carrying. Based on reports he received from postal inspectors and employees at the scene, he said the truck didn't appear to be fully loaded. "When there is any kind of transportation disaster and mail is being carried on any of these conveyances, the Postal Inspection Service responds to secure the mail," he said. Raw video,LOS ANGELES A 51-year-old man, suspected of drunkenly driving a large Vons delivery truck, was subdued by baton-wielding officers following a freeway chase from Calabasas to Santa Fe Springs Sunday, City News Service reported. Charles Thomas is accused of leading police on a 40-mile chase in his big truck down three freeways to the Vons distribution center, where a video journalist captured pictures of California Highway Patrol officers using batons to subdue him. A CHP press release said Thomas "aggressively exited his vehicle, failing to comply with the verbal commands from officers." Smith, the CHP said, was "taken into custody using departmentally-approved procedures." He suffered minor bruising, and although CHP officers said he did not want treatment, was taken to Norwalk Community Hospital for a check before he was booked at the sheriff's Norwalk station. No officers were injured. Originally, Los Angeles sheriff's deputies in Calabasas were flagged down at about 11:10 p.m. by several motorists who said a possibly-drunken driver in a big rig was weaving on the Ventura (101) Freeway, said sheriff's Sgt. Dan Raimo of the Malibu-Lost Hills Sheriff's Station. Deputies caught up to the eastbound truck near Tampa Avenue in Tarzana and attempted to pull the driver over, Raimo said. But the truck driver refused to yield. CHP officers officers took over the pursuit as the truck left the San Fernando Valley on the Hollywood (101) Freeway, he said. After more than 40 miles of pursuit down the 101 and Santa Ana (5) freeways -- and after running over a spike strip that punctured several tires -- the truck was driven into the large Vons distribution center in Santa Fe Springs at about 12:15 a.m. The Vons truck had not been reported stolen, Raimo said. Thomas, a Carson resident, was booked on suspicion of evasion and resisting arrest. This was filmed on Feb 03/08.

Police Chase Ends In Fiery Crash & Arrests 8/9/06 Noon Yusila Ramirez A South Florida police chase has ended in a fiery crash. Dozens of police cruisers were involved in the chase when the suspects slammed into an innocent driver before crashing their own car which burst into flames. A total of three vehicles were hit including two police cars which were sideswiped by the suspects. According to officers, the suspect driver originally told police he didn't want to stop because he didn't have a driver's license. Police say that's true but he also had marijuana and cocaine in the vehicle which is why they were trying to elude police during Wednesday morning's chase. The high speed chase started in Bal Harbour. Officers tried pulling the suspects over for speeding but the two men in the car took off and sideswiped two cop cars during their escape attempt. The chase came to an end on Northeast 163rd Street and 6th Avenue when the suspects T-boned a pickup truck and then slammed into a pole, causing their vehicle to burst into flames. The two suspects in the car managed to get out and then tried to outrun police again. One suspect was tasered by an officer. Two people were treated for minor injuries. The suspects are now in police custody.
